Six years of economic recession and conflict have plunged Haiti into a serious food crisis, with a large part of the country now classified as critical by international organizations.
A few figures:
- nearly 5.5 million Haitians, or half the population, are food insecure
- 40% of Haitians live below the poverty line ($2.15 a day).
“To break out of the current vicious circle and escape the looming food catastrophe, it is crucial to focus on the development of local agricultural sectors. This is the commitment of the agricultural development stakholders who remain mobilized, often under very difficult conditions, alongside producers to ensure, today, the continuity of their activities and, tomorrow, the reconquest of the country's food security.”
Agrisud has been working in Haiti since 2010, and remains mobilized alongside the families it supports to ensure their food self-sufficiency and strengthen the resilience of local farming systems.
