CONTEXT
With its proximity to the temples of Angkor, Siem Reap Province is home to the majority of Cambodia's tourism, generating a strong demand for fresh produce. This demand is largely met by products imported from neighboring countries. Local production is seasonal, relatively undiversified and dispersed among a multitude of small family farms. What's more, marketing networks are still too unstructured.
Since 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has disrupted the intervention context. The closure of borders has restricted imports of products from neighboring countries and limited the availability of agricultural produce. Today, the challenge of food autonomy for the province is at the heart of development strategies.
GOALS AND SOLUTIONS PROVIDED
- Bring small family farms into contact with markets through agro-ecological intensification, diversification and marketing.
- Strengthen the Province's food autonomy and resilience through the development of sustainable agricultural and food systems.
RESULTS
- 1,970 family farms supported.
- 29 socio-professional organizations strengthened and 1 network of 85 master farmers developed.
- “The Green Farmers Siem Reap” association, bringing together 300 farms to market their produce.
- 1 multi-stakeholder initiative to develop local food systems.
