CONTEXT
The Autonomous District of Abidjan and the Lagoon District are home to 30% of the Ivorian population. They represent a strategic area for strengthening the country's food system. These districts are home to a large number of family farms producing food crops (cassava, plantain) and market garden produce.
However, the farming systems in place are not very diversified, struggle to be productive and suffer from increasing land pressure. Atike, the staple food of the Ivorian population, is no exception to this trend: small-scale production is struggling to become viable, and value chains remain poorly structured.
It is against this backdrop that Agrisud has been working in partnership with the Autonomous District of Abidjan since 2021.
In 2023, intervention will be extended with the implementation of the AVAL project, which brings together Agronomes & Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (AVSF) and People Power Inclusion (PPI). This project aims to guarantee food security, improve income and employment for rural populations, and preserve natural resources.
OBJECTIVES
This project aims to :
- Ensure a stable and regular supply of quality fresh and processed produce (cassava, vegetables, plantain and attiéké).
- Secure the environment for farms and processing units to guarantee access to inputs, equipment and financing.
- Structure value chains to improve access to fresh and processed food products on rural and urban markets.
RESULTS
- 1,200 family farms and attiéké producers increased their production
- Family farms and attiéké producers sell their produce on the national market
- 15 POs offer services to improve and secure production quality and quantity
