In Ivory Coast, Agrisud and its partner the Autonomous District of Abidjan are working together to preserve and develop sustainable agriculture around Abidjan. This "territorial" approach is the subject of Agrisud's latest movie.

Peri-urban agricultural challenges in Abidjan and the need for ecological intensification

As in many metropolitan areas, agriculture around Abidjan is under severe pressure due to increasing urbanization. Agricultural areas dedicated to food crops are shrinking, impacting on agricultural production.

In this context, supporting producers in their agroecological transition is a decisive step towards intensifying production in a sustainable manner. But this is not enough. It must be complemented by securing farming activities in the long term.

This is where the "territorial" approach takes on its full meaning.

The pilot village of Adattié

In Adattié, Agrisud and the Autonomous District of Abidjan worked with local authorities and families in 2 complementary axes:

  • capacity transfer to intensify and improve food crop production and the production of attiéké (cassava semolina)
  • the elaboration of a territorial project for sustainable agriculture, identifying the priority actions to be carried out to secure agricultural activities: setting up local regulations, improving traffic routes, training young people, valorizing production...

The movie tells the story of this experience.

Several stories follow one another: Farmer Patrice tells how agroecological practices have improved his vegetable and cassava production; village women talk about the work they've done to transform cassava into attiéké; and the Village Committee presents how it has drawn up a development plan to preserve and enhance agriculture in its area.

The agroecological transition is not just a matter for farmers!
