CONTEXT

Haiti's economy is heavily based on very small-scale agriculture, often referred to as subsistence agriculture, and 3/4 of the rural population face difficulties in meeting their food needs. Environmental degradation, erosion and desertification are leading to a decline in agricultural production... regularly affected by severe climatic events.

In addition, the successive governments have failed to establish political stability, which leads Haiti - with an already fragile economy - to an even more alarming situation. Every economic indicator in the country is in the red. And extreme poverty is in full swing.

In this context, and to improve the living conditions of families, Agrisud and its local partner rely on the strengthening of grassroots rural communities through agroecology and the structuring of sectors.

OBJECTIVES AND SOLUTIONS PROVIDED

The project is also part of the Agriter program, which aims to strengthen the dynamics of local stakeholders to promote sustainable family farming.

More specifically :

  1. Supporting and bringing stakeholders together to identify and implement actions aimed at creating a political, physical, and economic framework favorable to the agroecological transition of territories.
  2. Assisting farms and stakeholders of the sectors – upstream and downstream of the production – in the agroecological transition.
  3. Promoting a sustainable and inclusive agricultural development approach through skills transfer, awareness-raising, and advocacy actions.

RESULTS

  • 572 family farms supported.
  • 16 community-based organizations (CBOs) strengthened.
  • 1 network of 70 master farmers in support of 1,800 family farms.
  • 1 agroecological platform strengthened in its awareness-raising and advocacy capacity in favor of the agroecological transition.
